As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day, I cannot help but reflect on what a difference a year makes. Last year, we were still largely isolated from family and friends, unable to to hug our loved ones or gather for celebrations. I plan to be watching fireworks with my family and some close friends on Sunday night. I hope you’re making plans to safely celebrate the holiday weekend as well!

A Fourth of July tradition returns with the Peachtree Road Race this weekend! The race this year will be held on July 3rd & July 4th. Roads near the start area of Lenox & Phipps Malls will be closed beginning at 2 am on race days. A complete list of road closures and when they will be closed is available here.

July begins Georgia’s fiscal year, and many of the pieces of legislation passed this year went into effect on July 1.

HB 286 prohibits law enforcement agencies from cutting their budgets more than 5% in one year, or cumulatively across five years. This bill preempts local governments from making decisions that best serve their community, and is trying to solve a problem that doesn’t exist – no local governments have decreased significantly their funding.

HB 317 increases taxes on short-term lodging rental in Georgia with services such as Airbnb & VRBO.

HB 466 removes an exemption for 17 year old drivers – they will now be required to take 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of on-the-road training before getting their driver’s license.

SB 221 allows state leaders to create leadership committees to raise money during the legislative session, circumventing current limits on campaign contributions.
